The fashion industry is constantly evolving and the introduction of technology has brought about significant changes in the way we shop, style, and express ourselves through fashion. With the rise of e-commerce and social media, fashion has become increasingly digital, and the next generation of fashion is all about harnessing the power of the web to create new and innovative experiences.

One of the key trends in next-gen fashion is the concept of a digital identity. As more and more people spend time online, our digital selves are becoming just as important as our physical selves. The concept of a digital identity refers to the representation of an individual online, typically through social media profiles, online profiles, and other online platforms. Globally, people average 6 hours and 58 minutes of screen time per day. In fact, daily screen time has increased by nearly 50 minutes per day since 2013 (6 hours and 9 minutes).

With the growing amount of time that people spend online, our digital selves are becoming more important, as they allow us to interact and communicate with others in the digital world.

In the fashion industry, a digital identity is particularly important as personal style and self-expression are integral aspects of the industry. Digital identity allows individuals to curate their online presence and share their unique fashion sense with the world, through the use of social media, blogs, and other online platforms. It also allows fashion brands and companies to connect with their customers and build a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion.

It is difficult to predict exactly what the future of digital identity will look like, but it is likely that it will continue to evolve and become more pressing as technology advances.

There are a few ways in which digital identity may evolve with future technology:

Web3

Web3 refers to the next generation of the internet, which is expected to be more decentralized and empower individuals to have more control over their online activity. Digital identity may become more closely tied to Web3 technologies, as they offer the potential for greater security and privacy for individuals. It is important that individuals are able to control their digital identity and protect their personal information online.

It was only too recently that Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter caused a lot of security controversies, especially his plan to only give verified status, also known as the "blue checkmark," to those who pay an $8 monthly subscription. Before this blue checkmark became a symbol of prestige, it was originally meant to help combat misinformation and disinformation on the internet. Blockchain technology could be the solution to secure identity and security in regard to digital identities.

Blockchain enables more secure management and storage of digital identities by providing unified, interoperable, and tamper-proof infrastructure with key benefits to enterprises, users, and IoT management systems. It's not just a matter of convenience; rather, it's crucial that we ensure safe access to digital services as they increasingly become a regular part of everyday life.

The Metaverse / VR

The Metaverse is a virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented realities, and the internet. As the Metaverse becomes more prevalent, digital identities may become closely tied to an individual's virtual presence within the Metaverse. This could involve the use of avatars or other virtual representations of an individual's identity. For example:

Virtual representation of self: In VR, individuals may use avatars or other virtual representations of themselves to interact with others. These virtual representations of self could become an important aspect of an individual's digital identity, as they allow individuals to express their personality and interests within the virtual world.

Virtual social interactions: VR has the potential to facilitate virtual social interactions in a more immersive and realistic way. As a result, individuals may spend more time interacting with others in virtual environments, and their digital identity may become more closely tied to these virtual social interactions.

Virtual experiences: VR allows individuals to experience virtual environments and events in a way that is more immersive and realistic than other forms of technology. As a result, individuals may have unique virtual experiences that become an important part of their digital identity.

Overall, as VR becomes more widely adopted and developed, it is likely that digital identity will become more closely tied to an individual's virtual presence and activities within VR environments.

Virtual Try-On

Virtual Try-On technology allows individuals to virtually try on clothing and accessories using a device, such as a smartphone or tablet. Digital identity may become closely tied to an individual's virtual try-on activity, as it allows them to virtually experiment with different fashion options and share their virtual outfits with others.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) technology allows individuals to overlay digital information onto the physical world in real-time. Digital identity may become closely tied to an individual's use of AR, as it allows them to virtually customize their physical environment and share their experiences with others.

Overall, these technologies have the potential to significantly impact the evolution of digital identity and the way in which individuals present and share their identity online. The state of next-gen fashion is exciting and full of possibilities. The integration of digital identity and technology is creating new and innovative ways for individuals to express themselves and for brands to connect with their customers. Virtual try-on is just one example of how this technology is transforming the fashion industry, and we can't wait to see what the future holds.
